Dreadlock fishtails are not just a hairstyle; they’re a canvas for creativity and self-expression. Elevate your dreadlocks with these two unique fishtail styles that will add flair to your look and spark inspiration in your styling routine. 🌻
Getting Started:
- Positioning: Begin at the front top of your head, where your natural part lies.
- Division: Select two dreadlocks from one side and cross them over to the opposite side, creating a foundational X-shape.
- Crossing Over: Choose two more dreadlocks from the other side and crisscross them on top of the initial pair, forming a fishtail pattern.
- Securing: As you hold the crossed dreadlocks in place, continue adding dreadlocks from each side towards the back of your head, maintaining the fishtail pattern.
- Finishing Touch: Once you’ve reached the back of your head, utilize the inside dreadlocks in the same manner as before. Finally, secure the end of the fishtail with a long dreadlock, tying it into a knot to complete the style.
Additional Tips:
- Experimentation: Don’t be afraid to play around with different dreadlock sizes and textures to create a dynamic fishtail effect.
- Personalization: Add beads, charms, or colored threads to your dreadlocks for a personalized touch that reflects your unique style.

Why are my dreads so Fluffy?
You just got your dreads in the past 6 months and they are super uber fluffy! WHY?
- Your hair is a new form and position and it doesn’t know what to do. Should the hair stay in the dread or get out? Jump in this dread or the one next to it?
- Dreads take about 1-2 years to mature ( this means they still need time to get tight and solid)
- They need regular maintenance but you got lazy to do it 😟
Process:
So let’s say that you’ve backcombed or twisted and ripped your hair, and now? Your dreads are so fluffy that you can’t even call them dreads..
First thing to do is —> Palm Roll!!
This is so so important! Palm rolling will help your dreads form and stay together, it will give them a straight and circular shape that you will love. I suggest to do this every day. Start from the root of your dread and come down will you are rolling the dread in your palm. This helps the hair stay close to the dread and not go supper fluffy!!
…
Then the next part is –> Crochet Needles!
Probably if you are doing this on your own it will take a while to get it right but when the technique works it’s like the sky has opened! Revelation!! The principle is to hook the hair on the needle and pull it in the dread. An easy way to start is by wrapping the hair around the needle and pulling itthrough the dread. This is what makes the knots, and dreads are loads of knots together 😜 I personally use 0.75mm but other people use 0.6 a lot of times. I think 0.75mm lets the dread breath a little more but the difference is minor really.. Find a crochet needle here
But Please –> DON’T USE WAX!!!
Please DON’T! Wax is a temporary solution for your dreads and the fluffy hair to stick together but it’s a longterm problem. In case you don’t know, bees wax is waterproof, therefore it’s very difficult to get it out of dreads in the future. Wax makes dreadlocks dirty, sticky and horrible and everything that you are exposed to stick on it! So please avoid it so you don’t regret it in the future!
In general, dreads will never stop getting messy but after a few years you had them they will mature. That means that the length of them will not need much of a maintenance apart from the roots. Your roots will always need some regular care.
The best thing to do is PALM ROLL them every day if you can as this will help them so much to keep a nice, circular and straight shape and not go wanky! This will also help the hair to stay close to the dread and not go super fluffy!! Remeber, you wont see the difference in a day but you will definitely see it in the long run!
I hope this was helpful and it brightened up your day 🙂 And don’t forget that you can ⬇️

Nits and Dreads – How to get rid of the Dreadlock Nightmare
Schools are opening again and every dreadhead that has kids or works around kids, is definitely fearing of the worst to come —> the nits, fleas, lice, or however you want to call them, the are the “Dreads Nightmare“
This little insects jump from head to head, layer their eggs and fill up heads with more of them..
What to do to save your dreads from nits:
- Tea Tree Oil: This is the best and most natural solution! Get an 100ml spray bottle, fill it with water and add 10-20 drops of tea tree oil. Tea tree oil helps to get the nits away from the hair as they hate the fresh and vivid smell of tea tree.
- Apply this 2-3 times a week
- When washing your dreads add some tea tree oil drops in your shampoo to help the smell stay in your dreads.
What usually happens with the nits is that once they land on your head they lay their eggs, the eggs take about 3 days to pop out and then they need 3 days to be able to reproduce. So to avoid them from being born and staying on your dreads you need to keep applying the tea tree oil on your hair!
If you keep on doing this the nits should disappear from your dreads.
You can find tea tree oil with a spray bottle here:

Warrior Dreads and Styling
Warrior Dreads and Styling
The warrior style is by far one of my favourites when I’m dreading. Through the years I’ve collected some great photos of people that I dreaded with the warrior style and I’d like to share it with you.
You can use them as inspiration for your look, or if you are potentially thinking of having dreads, these styles can give you ideas. So let’s go and dive into some warrior dreads and styling.
My Warrior Ladies
Women with dreads are figures that your eyes will catch straight away on the streets. The shaved sides, the undercuts, the dread fish-tales, the french plats, they make their dreadlock styles just amazing!
I do love them all! They are so strong and different. Each single one of them. It’s funny how they all said that after they got their dreads, they have a mad connection with them. Something that keeps them connected to their hair better than before and more connected to them selves as well. That just makes my heart open! ❤️
Warrior Woman with Maori tattoos and dreads:
Rachel has visited my studio in Manchester to get her dreadlocks. A lady who has a body almost full of tattoos now. She always loved dreads and finally she decided to get her hair dreaded with some natural dread extensions added to them. Her style now looks even more fulfilled, looking like a warrior 🙂
The Maori tattoos on her, along with many others just make her look stunning (even more than what she is) and the dreads just complete her look. The shaved sides and undercut are matching the warrior look perfectly and the decoration with beads is a playful addition.
Other things you can add on dreadlocks to achieve the style are hair wraps and feathers to support the look. You can find a great selection of Dreadlock Beads on my shop. Or you can book an appointment with me to install some hair wraps on your dreads or hair.
Viking Dread Styles on Men:
Now these guys are super warriors. They have that viking warrior look that no one can resist. I love men with dreads, I adore the viking dread style 🛡️❤️⚔️
Dreadhawks, dread fish-tales, and let’s not forget the beards! It’s all about that hair at the end of the day 😉
The first man in the photo is a real Viking man of the North of England, Garth Urlicson a great creative who works with wood and creates up-cycled furniture because nothing should go to waste! Love his style!
The last one in the big picture is Lord Ryan Merga who brews his own mead, beers and wines! He has one of the most iconic Viking styles with his ginger hair and very long beard!
Book an appointment:
If you would like to get dreadlocks installed you can always get in touch and we can discuss the look your envisioning. I’d love to do more warrior styled dreads!
